High Liner Foods staff went above and beyond recently to ensure Mississauga families are kept fed with healthy and nutritious meals.

Employee volunteers from the frozen seafood company’s Mississauga office prepared, packaged, and delivered 540 bagged sandwich lunches to The Salvation Army Mississauga Community Church’s three locations to feed families and individuals in need.

“Thank you so much to High Liner Foods for their generous support of the residents of Mississauga. Today, our clients are happy in knowing that a nourishing meal is readily available for them and their families,” says Joel Binner, Director of Community and Family Services at Mississauga Community Church. “This collaboration with High Liner is invaluable in aiding The Salvation Army’s mission to bring hope to those facing adversity.”

The chicken, ham and beef meals came with an apple and a snack bar, and all meals were handed out by The Salvation Army Community and Family Services to food bank clients in one day. High Liner Foods first donated meals to The Salvation Army in 2021, when company volunteers provided 300 to 400 hot meals to families and individuals in need.

“This event was specifically planned to support September as Hunger Action Month and raise awareness of hunger in our communities, and more importantly act against it,“ says Caitlyn Vilchez, co-organizer of the High Liner Foods volunteer event.

“Philanthropic support to create a positive social influence is something High Liner Foods is committed to year-round, and we are thankful to partner with organizations like The Salvation Army Mississauga to make a meaningful difference,” says Glen Starodub, a representative of High Liner Food’s Philanthropy Committee.

At the Mississauga Community Church’s Cawthra location, 400 families a week are assisted with food support; 215 families are provided with meals weekly at the Meadowvale location; and at the Collegeway location, 275 families depend on Community and Family Services for meals each week. Compared to last year, demand in 2023 is up 90 per cent across the three locations and at Collegeway, the community need for meal support is up 20 per cent compared to 2022.
