50 years of Salvation Army Memories in Mississauga

Mississauga Community Church celebrated its 50th anniversary with special events that brought together past and present church members.
Among the events were a 70s-themed throwback party, roller skating, a 50th Anniversary Concert and Ceremony on Saturday, followed by a church service and community fun fair at Port Credit Memorial Park on Sunday.
The first Salvation Army Church opened in Mississauga in 1972 on Cawthra Road as the Mississauga Temple. A second location, Cornerstone Community Church, opened in 1979, followed by the Erin Mills Corps in 1986. All three location now operate collectively as Mississauga Community Church.
Commissioners Floyd and Tracey Tidd, Salvation Army Canada and Bermuda Territorial Leaders, delivered their message of goodwill for the 50 years of service provided by Mississauga Community Church. The Tidds were the first Corps Officers at Cornerstone Community Church.
Another special guest was Woody Hale, who, along with his wife Sharon, were the first Corps Officers at Mississauga Temple when it opened in 1972. Attendees included former officers and church members whose ties to go back generations.
The Salvation Army Mississauga Community Church Captain Jeff Arkell credits church members and local residents for 50 years of support.
“It comes down to the determination and spirit of the people that have kept the heartbeat of the mission moving forward. It is a dedicated group of people that want to see the community of God grow in Mississauga,” Captain Arkell said.
