Making Christmas Possible

While the holidays are a time for celebration and unity, for many, it can be stressful due to different circumstances. Tough financial situations paired with personal challenges can make it hard for some to enjoy Christmas. This is the case for Terry Myers from Red Deer, Alta., who credits The Salvation Army for being there for him and making the holiday season more enjoyable.

“I moved to Red Deer several years ago and ran into tough times. I started going to The Salvation Army for food initially and then I applied for their Christmas program,” Terry shares.

Through the Christmas program, Terry receives gift cards for groceries plus winter wear, which he appreciates greatly.

“Every year they give me coats, mitts, gloves, anything like that,” Terry adds.

“I use the gift cards to buy groceries.”

Although Terry lives by himself, the current high cost of living adds up. The assistance provided by The Salvation Army during the holidays makes a difference for him financially.

“I use the gift cards to buy groceries. Last year, I was able to get $150 worth of groceries thanks to the program,” he says. “This helps me to have money left over for rent and other expenses.” 

Throughout the couple of years Terry has been going to The Salvation Army, he has witnessed the impact the organization has on the community.

“Everybody is nice here at The Salvation Army. It feels like a safe place to go to.”

“Without them, we would have a lot of people unprepared for winter and Christmas,” he adds.

The year 2025 has been hard for Terry emotionally. He lost two brothers, so he expects a Christmas filled with memories. He spends the holidays with his sister but admits that the generosity of donors and staff at The Salvation Army helps him feel supported and cared for.

“This service is great. Everybody is nice here at The Salvation Army. It feels like a safe place to go to.”
