London’s Seniors Share Food and Friendship at The Salvation Army
For Nancy McSloy, a retiree, The Salvation Army’s London community services’ senior’s lunch is more than just a free meal. It is a time filled with laughter, connection and a sense of belonging.
“I would like to say thank you. What they are doing is amazing.”
“I first heard about it on Facebook. I had already been to a few cooking classes at The Salvation Army, so I was familiar with some of the programs. I signed up for the seniors’ lunch and I am enjoying it a lot,” Nancy says.
The seniors’ lunch is held once a month. It is open to anyone aged 55 or older. It offers a three-course meal and activities. Each event features a unique theme, such as an Italian-inspired “Taste of Italy” and a beach party complete with burgers and summer attire. Guests are encouraged to dress up and join in the fun. Nancy says this helps create a welcoming and joyful atmosphere.
“The volunteers and staff go above and beyond,” Nancy shares. “For the Italian theme, we got ‘boarding passes’ at the door, watched videos of Italy, ate pasta and the room was set up like a café. It was all so well-organized.”
Nancy began attending the lunches in April. She says the program provides meaningful social connection. The seating is arranged to encourage conversation and each visit has helped her to meet new people.
“I usually go to lunch with a couple of friends, but we always end up sitting with somebody else. It’s a great atmosphere,” Nancy adds.
“Here you get a balanced meal and a chance to talk to others.”
For seniors, Nancy says opportunities like these are essential, especially for those who may live alone or feel isolated.
“Once you retire, it is easy to become housebound,” she says. “Here you get a balanced meal and a chance to talk to others. I think that is invigorating. Fellowship is so necessary.”
Nancy is deeply grateful to The Salvation Army for making the seniors’ lunch happen every month.
“To the staff and volunteers, I would like to say thank you. What they are doing is amazing.”
This program is made possible thanks to local businesses that participate in the events as corporate team-building opportunities. These teams help prepare and serve the meals, while also contributing financially. Their support ensures the lunches remain free for all guests.
