“Impossible Choices” Short Film Recognized at Canadian Film Festivals
Launched in late 2024, The Salvation Army’s Impossible Choices campaign brought attention to the growing number of Canadians who are forced to make heartbreaking decisions due to poverty—such as choosing between paying rent or buying food for their children. The campaign carried the message that a donation to The Salvation Army could be their answer to these impossible choices by offering practical help and real hope.
Today, we’re pleased to share that the Impossible Choices director’s cut version was officially selected by both the Toronto Shorts International Film Festival and the Edmonton Short Film Festival.

The film version powerfully illustrates impossible choices and real-life scenarios where individuals and families must choose between essentials—covering utility bills or buying medicine, skipping Christmas celebrations to maintain housing, or sacrificing one need for another. These stories reflect the harsh reality faced by many.
The film recently premiered on August 30 at the Toronto Shorts International Film Festival, held at Innis Town Hall Theatre. In attendance was director, Andrew Litten, who traveled from Georgia, along with two talented cast members, Nicole Charles and Sam James White. After the screening, they participated in a Q&A session, offering insights into the making of the film and discussing the mission and impact of The Salvation Army.
We’re grateful for the platform these festivals provide to spotlight stories that matter. As the film continues its festival journey, we hope it sparks important conversations about poverty, dignity and the choices no one should have to make alone.
