Thrift store workers hold box of donated items

Decluttering Helps Power Salvation Army Programs

Many of us have clothing or household items we no longer use but continue to store at home.  Donating unused possessions to The Salvation Army Thrift Store can support shoppers at thrift stores as well as individuals accessing the organization’s programs and services.

This February, The Salvation Army Thrift Store is inviting everyone to participate in the Clutter-Free February campaign by donating new and gently-used goods. As a thank you, donors who give during the month receive a 20% off coupon for their next thrift store purchase when they drop off their items.

“Every donation we receive has the power to change someone’s life.”

The thrift store’s team ensures every donation is carefully processed and sold. The proceeds go toward funding programs such as food banks, shelters, substance use recovery services and emergency disaster response efforts across the country.

“Every donation we receive has the power to change someone’s life. Through Clutter‑Free February, we’re inviting Canadians to join us in supporting programs that provide hope, dignity and practical help to people across the country,” says Ted Troughton, managing director of The Salvation Army Thrift Store.

In addition, decluttering can offer personal benefits. Research has shown that cleaning out your home can have a positive impact on mental health by reducing stress, improving focus and creativity, boosting mood and enhancing sleep quality.

Donating items you no longer need also has an impact on environmental sustainability by extending the lifespan of usable goods, reducing waste and diverting items from garbage lots. Last year alone, The Salvation Army Thrift Store diverted more than 80 million pounds of clothing and household items from local landfills.

“We’re inviting Canadians to join us in supporting programs that provide hope, dignity and practical help to people across the country.”

The most needed items at Salvation Army thrift stores are housewares, kitchen essentials, beddings, linens, clothing and footwear.

While Clutter-Free February runs throughout the month, donations are accepted all year-round. By participating in this campaign, you not only clear space in your home but also promote environmental consciousness and support those in need by funding Salvation Army services and providing affordable, accessible shopping options for all ages and sizes.

Donations can be dropped off at one of 97 Thrift Stores and 117 Donor Welcome Centres across Canada. Visit Thriftstore.ca for participating locations and hours of operation.

In the last fiscal year alone, three million customers visited Salvation Army thrift stores.
