CHEK Drive-Thru Raises Over $116,000 for Local Families

On Friday, December 6, 2024, CHEK’s parking lot in Victoria transformed into a hub of solidarity and generosity during the 31st Annual CHEK Christmas Drive-Thru & Telethon. With dozens of volunteers, donors, and engaged viewers, this year’s event exceeded all expectations, raising more than $116,000 in just two hours and collecting close to 3,000 toys to support local families this Christmas.
The initiative, held in partnership with The Salvation Army, aims to assist the most vulnerable families in Greater Victoria during the holiday season. “We’re here for the community, and every donation makes a huge difference for those in need,” shared one volunteer while helping to load trucks with toys, food, and clothing.
Kevin Smith, manager of the Ross Place Retirement Center and a long-time Victoria resident, stood out as a remarkable example of generosity. For the fifth consecutive year, Kevin participated in the CHEK Drive-Thru, raising $7,000 and donating a large collection of toys and essential items. “As a family, we make it a priority to plan our donations with the needs of the community in mind. This event is more than a tradition for us—it’s a way to teach our children about the importance of giving back,” Kevin said emotionally.

In an island community where a sense of togetherness is strong, initiatives like this are vital to keeping the spirit of unity alive. “We’re a small island with a big heart,” Kevin continued. “If we show our kids the value of helping others, we’re planting seeds for future generations. My daughter already sees this as part of our life, and I hope she carries on this tradition in the future.”
Volunteers played a fundamental role in the event’s success, answering phones, receiving donations, and ensuring that The Salvation Army trucks were efficiently loaded. By the end of the night, as trucks departed filled with toys and food, the spirit of generosity was undeniable.
For those who couldn’t participate on Friday, there’s good news. CHEK will continue to accept donations during business hours from December 9 to December 13 at 780 Kings Road. Accepted donations include new toys, clothing, canned goods, and any type of monetary donation.
Thanks to the generosity of donors like Kevin and the dedication of volunteers, the CHEK Drive-Thru remains an event that not only provides immediate support but also inspires the community to foster a spirit of giving. This year’s goal was surpassed, and there is hope that in 2025, this cherished tradition will continue to grow, bringing even more joy and relief to local families.
Thank you to CHEK for your incredible, ongoing support of The Salvation Army in the Capital Regional District.
