Spread the love

The holiday season is a time for generosity, and few initiatives embody this spirit as beautifully as Uncle Vinny’s Toy Drive. Last week, a number of family members had the opportunity to volunteer at The Salvation Army Boundless Vancouver Toy Shop, where they witnessed firsthand the impact of their contributions. Among them was Pinder Saran, sister of the late Vinny Maan, whose memory serves as the heart of this initiative.

A Legacy of Giving

Uncle Vinny’s Toy Drive began as a modest effort with a goal of collecting 100–200 toys. However, the drive surpassed all expectations in its first year, gathering an astounding 1,650 toys. Since its inception in 2021, the drive has collected over $90,000 worth of toys. This year, organizers are aiming to reach between 1,500 and 1,600 toys despite challenges posed by the economy.

“We’ve had supporters take on their own fundraisers,” Pinder shared. “For example, First West Credit Union hosted a pancake breakfast for employees, contributing over $1,300 plus toys. It’s amazing to see our community coming together.”

The toys, ranging from stocking stuffers to larger gifts, cater to children from newborns to 16-year-olds. Special efforts are made to address gaps in donations for teenagers, with funds used to purchase items like electronics, and gift cards.

Healing Through Giving

Uncle Vinny’s birthday on November 29th and his passing on December 11th mark bittersweet milestones for his family. “Christmas was so big for him,” Pinder said. “The drive has helped us heal and cope with our grief. It’s a proud moment to see my parents so involved, wrapping boxes and organizing toys.”

Every year, the family gathers on December 11th to reflect and celebrate their achievements. “That day is both joyful and tearful,” Pinder admitted. “And after The Salvation Army picked up the toys, the living room goes from being packed with toys to empty, and it’s a reminder of why we do this.”

Witnessing the Impact

Volunteering at the Toy Shop was a poignant experience for the donors. “It’s reassuring to see our toys going to the right place,” Pinder remarked. “To see the appreciation from families who benefit—it’s incredibly comforting.”

At the Toy Shop, families select a variety of items, including toys, books, and even family gifts—a new addition this year. Volunteers assist families in choosing gifts, ensuring they leave with smiles and full hearts.

“Witnessing the positive influence on families and children during the holidays is deeply gratifying and healing. Vinny would cherish seeing smiles on children’s faces. Honoring him in this way feels like the perfect means to perpetuate his legacy.”

A Community United

The Toy Drive has expanded its reach, with collection points across Surrey, Abbotsford, Langley, Vancouver, and another toy drive in Toronto. Local businesses, schools, and organizations, such as Home Depot, play vital roles in supporting the drive.

Pinder emphasized the importance of community involvement. “Holidays are a hard time, and you never know what someone is going through. Be kind, be considerate. Giving back isn’t just about money or toys—it’s about time and effort.”

As the holiday season approaches, Uncle Vinny’s Toy Drive continues to embody the spirit of giving, proving that even in the hardest times, love and kindness can shine brightly.
