The Importance of Volunteering
During these unknown and critical times, The Army is still open, serving on the front lines, providing food, shelter and safety to our community’s most vulnerable. As a volunteer-based organization, our dedicated volunteers are essential and vital; helping all year long in many of our programs such as community meals and food programs.
While we are still open and still serving 365 days a year, it looks a bit different; keeping the wellness and safety of our staff, volunteers and clients as our number one priority.
Across the province, every one of our 56 Ministry Units have been working diligently to serve their communities, taking the necessary precautions to keep everyone safe. We are promoting good personal hygiene practices, including hand washing often, physical distancing, proper sneezing / coughing techniques, and avoiding physical contact where possible.
Some adjustments to services include:
Vancouver Harbour Light is offering bagged to go meals every day, serving 300 – 350 guests every meal service.
Similar adjustments were made in Vernon, their Community Response Unit (CRU) is outside their building, feeding those in need.
Hot lunch meals are now served in to go containers at Ocean Crest Community Church in Campbell River. Their Food Bank is still up and running, and they are delivering food hampers to seniors in need.
We are proud to say we are still helping those in need and taking every precaution to protect not only clients and Army staff, but also Army volunteers.
“To our wonderful volunteers, we miss you a lot and we are looking forward to the day to welcome you all back.” – Marianne Hicks, Director of Administration Vancouver Harbour Light
It’s simple. Our volunteers are our heroes. Their endless effort and uplifting spirits show their courage, love and unity to help others. Their actions give everyone hope today and every day.
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” – Deuteronomy 31:6 NIV
