Backpacks of Hope: BC Communities Unite to Transform Back-to-School Season
In communities across British Columbia, The Salvation Army is transforming the back-to-school experience into a celebration of hope and possibility. From Vancouver’s bustling Fraser Street to the valley communities of Langley and the coastal heart of Port Alberni, each backpack represents more than just school supplies – it represents a community coming together to ensure every child starts their academic year with confidence and dignity.
A Province United in Purpose
“We cover all the way out to Aldergrove, across the freeway to Walnut Grove, and throughout both Langley City and Township,” explains Dan Donkers, Operations Manager at The Salvation Army Gateway of Hope in Langley. This expanded reach will support approximately 900 students this year, demonstrating how local initiatives can grow to meet community needs while maintaining personalized support.
At The Salvation Army Alberni Valley, Major Michael Ramsay shares how their program creates opportunities for the entire community to participate. “When children come in with their parents or grandparents, they themselves can make a donation that helps another child,” he explains. “Children helping children opens the door for a brighter future.”
Meanwhile, in Vancouver, Boundless Vancouver’s Back-to-School Program serves over 120 families annually, creating a welcoming space where families enjoy game stations and activities while receiving essential supplies. This year Boundless Vancouver gave out nearly 200 backpacks and school supplies to families who need it most. This approach transforms what could be a challenging experience into a joyful community celebration.
Community in Action
Across these communities, The Salvation Army’s back-to-school initiatives showcase the power of local solutions. From volunteer drivers in Langley to intergenerational giving in Port Alberni and family-friendly events in Vancouver, each community adapts its approach to meet unique local needs while maintaining the core mission of supporting student success.
“We work with what we have and make sure everybody gets taken care of. Even when resources are limited, we find ways to ensure every student has what they need to start their school year with dignity. It’s about more than just supplies – it’s about giving each child an equal opportunity to succeed.” – Dan Donkers, Operations Manager, The Salvation Army Gateway of Hope
