2026 HEAT Fund now available to support Nova Scotians with home heating costs

HALIFAX, Jan. 15, 2026 – Nova Scotians in urgent need of help with home heating costs can now apply for financial assistance through the 2026 Home Energy Assistance Top-up (HEAT) Fund.

The HEAT Fund, supported by the Government of Nova Scotia and Nova Scotia Power, has been a lifeline for those experiencing heat insecurity. The program provides emergency funds for low-income households struggling to pay for home heating (oil, propane, electric, wood, and natural gas).

“The HEAT Fund plays a crucial role in supporting Nova Scotians who suddenly find themselves in urgent need of home heating assistance,” says Major Pam Goodyear, divisional secretary for public relations at The Salvation Army. “We’re seeing more people reach out to us every day, and this generous support will make a meaningful difference for those experiencing heat insecurity throughout the province.”

For more than 20 years, this program has helped keep thousands of individuals and families across Nova Scotia warm during the winter. The program runs annually starting in January, with a maximum assistance amount of $400 per household.

“We value this opportunity to work with The Salvation Army to help ensure Nova Scotia’s most vulnerable citizens can access emergency funding to keep their homes warm and safe this winter,” says Jill Balser, Minister of Service Nova Scotia. “This is all part of our work to help make life more affordable for more Nova Scotians.”

The Salvation Army is deeply grateful for the Government of Nova Scotia’s contribution of $800,000 to the HEAT Fund in 2026, alongside Nova Scotia Power’s support of $300,000. Thanks to their commitment, this vital program will continue to assist those in need until the fund is fully depleted.

“Nova Scotia winters can be challenging, and no one should have to worry about staying warm in their own home,” says Jennifer Parker, vice president, communications & external engagement, Nova Scotia Power. “The HEAT Fund helps people get through incredibly difficult moments, and we’re proud to continue our support so Nova Scotians can access help when they need it most.”
