For the entire month of May, The Salvation Army partnered with Move Radio, Mic Mac Mall (Halifax Regional Municipality), and Brookside Mall (Fredericton) to help fight period poverty in their respective cities through a Tampon Tuesday campaign.

Tampon Tuesday is a grassroots program that works with community partners to collect menstrual hygiene products for distribution among the community. One of the most requested yet least donated items at food banks, access to menstrual hygiene products protects the dignity of our clients and gives hope to those in need.

“Period poverty is a genuine issue, not just here but in every part of our nation,” says Tanya Arseneault, Salvation Army Community Ministries Coordinator (Fredericton). “It forces individuals to make tough choices, such as prioritizing food over tampons, housing over pads, and countless other decisions needed to survive in the face of this unseen form of poverty.”

Residents of Fredericton and Halifax demonstrated their generous spirit when, in just four short weeks, over 1000 packages of female hygiene products were donated – totaling over 35,000 individual hygiene items.

“Together, The Salvation Army, our partners, and all the generous people who donated are helping combat period poverty and provide dignity to our clients, one box at a time,” says Jennifer Hale.

Donations from the Tampon Tuesday campaign will be distributed throughout Halifax and Fredericton to those most in need through local foodbanks, street ministry outreach, and school programs.
