This time last year, 69-year-old Jayne was manning one of The Salvation Army’s iconic Christmas kettles. This year, due to COVID-19 challenges and restrictions the Manitoban is unable to do what she loves most—volunteering to help her community.

“For more than a century, The Salvation Army has raised funds through the annual Christmas Kettle Campaign,” says Major Jamie Rands of The Salvation Army. “This year will be quite a challenge.”

“Every donation to a Christmas kettle matters”

In some communities, there is great uncertainty about how many kettles will be out due to pandemic-related lockdowns and closing businesses. The Salvation Army is hoping that Canadians unable to donate in person will do so online at FilltheKettle.com or by phone at 1-800-SAL-ARMY (1-800-725-2769).

“I have volunteered with The Salvation Army in various roles over the past five years,” says Jayne. “I’ve heard and seen firsthand how donations help.”

Jayne says countless numbers of passersby and people who donate to The Salvation Army kettle comment on how grateful they are for the practical help they received when they met with hard times or after disaster struck. “I hear a lot of heart-warming stories,” she says.

“There are needs out there that just won’t go away”

One of Jayne’s volunteer roles before COVID hit was at a Salvation Army kids club where, every Thursday night, children from low-income families were picked up at their homes by bus, brought to the church for games and crafts and were fed supper.

“One night there was a little boy who stayed at the front door, refusing to take his boots off and participate,” says Jayne. “I soon discovered that he didn’t own any socks and was embarrassed. Once we provided him with a new pair, he was excited to join the fun.

“Every donation to a Christmas kettle matters,” continues Jayne. “There are needs out there that just won’t go away.
