Hope Run Halifax Successfully Raises Vital Funds for The Salvation Army

On July 25-26, runners from Halifax and surrounding areas laced up their shoes to take part in Hope in the City Run – a virtual run in support of The Salvation Army.

“It was such an exciting day,” Major Elaine Locke, special events coordinator for The Salvation Army Maritime Division. “The community really showed up to support us.”

The event took place wherever the runner was. Participants registered online and picked up their T-shirt and bib via contactless pick-up. On event day, they completed the run in an area they were comfortable in, registered their time online and received a virtual medal. 

Many chose to share their run on social media using #HopeRunHalifax 

“It was such a great turn out,” she explains. “Even if it was essentially through social media” 

Major Elaine Locke has been organizing fundraising events for The Salvation Army for many years. While this one may be different, she says it certainly has its perks. 

“As an event organizer, you often don’t get to participate yourself,” explains Elaine. “But with this virtual model I was able to take part with my family and we had a great time.”

The Salvation Army was forced to cancel many key fundraising events due to COVID-19. Virtual events, such as Hope in the City Run, create an opportunity to raise funds and engage the community. 

“We’ve already had people ask if we’re going to host another virtual run,” says Elaine. “It’s a great way to stay active in a fun and safe way during this new reality we’re facing. Thank you to everyone who took part in the event.”
