Celebrating Senior’s Month: Elzelina’s Tulip Story — A Blooming Legacy

At Meighen Health Centre, every resident’s journey is a living testament to resilience, hope, and history. In celebration of Senior’s Month, we are honoured to share the remarkable story of Elzelina Bezemer, whose life blossomed like the tulips she holds dear.
Born in the Netherlands in the city of Breda, Elzelina’s childhood was shaped by the trials of World War II. Her home, partially destroyed by bombing, became a refuge when Canadian soldiers moved in during the liberation. “They were very nice,” she remembers fondly—her voice soft, but her spirit strong.
That bond between Canada and the Netherlands continues to this day, symbolized by the annual gift of tulip bulbs from the Dutch people to Canada. It’s a floral tribute to freedom, friendship, and gratitude.
Inspired by Elzelina’s memories, our residents created a meaningful tulip-themed art display in the lobby this May, using templates from Veterans Affairs Canada. At its heart stands Elzelina’s “tulip dress”, a vibrant expression of her heritage and enduring strength.
This Senior’s Month, we honour Elzelina—and all the remarkable residents at Meighen—for the stories they carry and the wisdom they continue to share. Their lives are a blooming legacy, reminding us that history lives on through every smile, memory, and act of courage.
