As Thanksgiving approaches, a time for gratitude and reflection, we at The Salvation Army in British Columbia are reminded of the growing challenges many in our community face. Rising food costs, inflation, and housing insecurity are pressing concerns for families and individuals who may have never experienced financial hardship before. As a leading provider of social services in B.C., we are committed to addressing these root causes of poverty and working alongside community partners to create a lasting positive impact.

The Salvation Army Vernon Community Church is a shining example of the innovative ways we are tackling food insecurity across the province. Lieutenant Neil Thompson shares a story that highlights the transformative power of our services, “We had a couple who came to us at their lowest point, struggling with addiction and having lost custody of their children. Through the support of The Salvation Army Food Bank and the Pathway of Hope program, we were able to work with them to turn their lives around. Today, they are in secure housing, have regained custody of their children, and are active members of our community. They give all praise to God for their journey of recovery and transformation.”

In Vernon, we have adapted to the increasing demand for food security by implementing strategic changes. These efforts, representing just one of the many approaches we employ throughout the province, include developing partnerships with other community agencies to better serve specific demographics, such as those experiencing homelessness, while also focusing on families facing ongoing food insecurities. The grocery-style market allows clients to choose their food, fostering dignity and strengthening relationships.

Volunteers and community partners are vital to our operations. Often, people who receive assistance from The Salvation Army Food Bank are inspired by the work we do and decide to give back as volunteers. These stories exemplify the profound impact our services have on individuals, motivating them to support others in need and contribute to their community.

As we gather this Thanksgiving, we are filled with gratitude for the support of our community and the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of those in need. We are thankful for the volunteers, donors, and partners who make our work possible and for the resilience and strength of the individuals and families we serve.

Looking ahead, the goal in Vernon is to create a more efficient and welcoming environment for those seeking assistance. By moving the food bank operations into a dedicated space, we aim to streamline our processes and enhance the experience for clients, ensuring that everyone who comes through our doors feels supported and valued.

This Thanksgiving season, we urge the broader community to support their local Salvation Army food bank, recognizing that anyone can experience a season of need.

“It could be your next-door neighbour who needs a little extra support,” says Neil Thompson. “The more people understand that there’s no stigma in seeking help, the more we can support our friends and neighbours during challenging times.”

Your contributions make a significant difference in the lives of families in need. By supporting The Salvation Army, you are helping to provide immediate relief and long-term stability for those facing hardship. Together, we can continue to make a positive impact in our community.
