This First Person article is the experience of Kimberley Johnson, an EDS Specialist for The Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Services. Kimberley spent a little over a week in Yellowknife preparing and serving meals to first responders fighting the wildfires.

I am halfway home after an incredible experience serving the brave firefighters in the Yellowknife fires! My role was to ensure they had the fuel they needed to keep going because, without food, they couldn’t do their job. It was truly an honour to serve these amazing individuals.

Their drive, spirit, and determination were absolutely contagious! Even on the longest days, their morale remained high, leaving me with a renewed faith in humanity.

I have never witnessed such an incredible display of teamwork and unity. Despite it being our responsibility to take care of them, the firefighters constantly checked in on us. Whenever I felt overwhelmed, they were there, offering their help and support.

When fuel wasn’t available, someone always came through with a jerry can. When hotels were scarce on my journey home, phone calls were made, and the challenge was swiftly resolved. The Yellowknife fire chief even insisted on taking me on a tour of the town in a fire truck despite being so busy. Their kindness and resourcefulness amazed me!

While every team left an impression on me, two teams stood out in particular. Edmonton’s fire department was one of the first to offer their assistance. They noticed that the topography of our staging area wasn’t level, making our jobs more challenging. They offered to find supplies to level it off for us in their precious downtime. The chief even took a moment to offer me a quick hug and words of encouragement. Their thoughtfulness touched my heart.

And, of course, the Safety First team, who felt like a newfound family, looking out for me every step of the way. I was there for them, but they provided me with a feeling of belonging and safety that I’ll forever cherish.

Before leaving, the Safety First team’s owner, Jon, asked to take a photo with me. It was such a humbling and emotional moment, and I couldn’t help but feel honoured.

Thank you, Yellowknife firefighters, Edmonton’s fire department, and all the incredible teams who selflessly came together to combat the fires. You are true heroes, and your kindness and dedication will never be forgotten!
