The Salvation Army’s Food Truck is on the road in Niagara Falls serving the local community with the help of mission partners.  Thanks to donations and support from local businesses, The Salvation Army has been providing weekly meals in four locations since May.

The generosity from service partners such as The Lions Club, The Red Knights Retired Firefighters Motorcycle Club Niagara Chapter, Thorowest Bakery who donates 100 sub buns every week, The Meat Shoppe who donates deli meats and cheese once a month, Lococo’s who gives a box of fruit each week and Foodland in Chippawa who donates a variety of food items each month.

Since starting up the truck in late May, the number of meals has grown to 100 a week.

“For the summer we are serving cold meals such as subs, salads and hearty sandwiches with fruit and water or coffee and a sweet treat. This is due to the heat and we are training many new mission partners,” said Salvation Army Niagara Orchard Community Church Major Nancy Braye. “We will start serving hot meals in the Fall which will be made in our church kitchen.”

Major Nancy says when the truck started serving this Spring they received a very warm welcome.

“There were a lot of smiles and people saying how happy they were to see us. Many of those who come for meals are seniors who sit and chat with us while they eat their meal. It’s not just about a meal – it’s also about connection. Others who come are homeless or at risk of being homeless, are underemployed and or have physical and mental health issues. We are seeing people in their teens all the way up to their late 80’s.”

“Niagara Falls is a very generous community. As people are starting to see the truck, we are getting phone calls from people asking how they can help,” said Major Nancy. “We are also receiving welcoming and enthusiastic greetings and it just reminds us of what a blessing this community is. We are grateful for the support from our mission partners and service partners.”

For those who would like to donate toward the Food Truck Ministry, The Salvation Army Niagara Orchard Community Church needs cases of bottled water , large cans of coffee and monetary donations are always appreciated so they can meet the specific needs each week.
