The Day Camp Assistant is responsible for assisting with the operation of a day camp program. The Day Camp Assistant will assist in all program areas for the day camp program.  They will encourage, support respect, and demonstrate a positive, caring, energetic, attitude towards all who attend.  The Day Camp Assistant will provide a fun and safe summer day camp experience for youth aged 6-11 years old.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists with the operation of the day camp and lead various camp activities including Bible lessons, arts & crafts, music, sports and games, etc.
  • Supervise a group of children with another team member, monitor their activities, and encourage participation
  • Ensure the health and safety of all children
  • Participate in all activities including the setting up and clean-up of activities as required.
  • Observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, reporting inappropriate behaviour to Day Camp Leader or Youth Worker
  • Chaperone all field trips
  • Encourage respect for personal property, camp equipment, and facilities

Health and Safety

  • Ensure that Day Camp area is tidy in relation to appearance, condition and safety                                                                    as recommended by Public Health etc.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures

Perform other duties as required

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  •  This is a temporary full-time position based on 35 hours per week
  • Flexibility in scheduling is required
  • Church grounds (Both indoor and outdoor work environment)
  • Working with youth from the ages of 6-11 years old.
  • Indoor and outdoor environment
  • Fast paced and noisy environment
  • Up to 50% travel to external program locations (e.g., public parks, library, etc.) by public transit or walking, depending on weather conditions

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • This position is funded in part through the Canada Summer Jobs Program and the following represents the applicant criteria:
    • Is between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of the employment.
    • Is a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act*: and,
    • Is legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial / territorial legislation and regulations.
    • *International students are not eligible.  Recent immigrants are eligible if they are a Canadian Citizen or a permanent resident.
  • Standard First Aid and CPR is an asset but not required.

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  •  Prior experience with day camp and/or working with children preferred

  •  Passionate for building loving relationships with youth and children inspired by the positive values of the Bible, The Salvation Army (Hope, Service, Dignity, and Stewardship)
  • Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility
  • Able to problem solve on the spot, be resilient, adaptable, and flexible
  • Ability to take a leadership role and communicate in a group setting
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work cooperatively, patiently and effectively
  • A desire to be creative and innovative showing initiative with limited supervision
  • Excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills
  • Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities
