How Old-fashioned Phone Calls are Changing Lives

Every October, Bernice Langdon gathers her lists of more than 175 telephone numbers to call people who support her participation in The Salvation Army’s Santa Shuffle, a family-friendly fundraising event that helps to assist vulnerable people in need during the Christmas season and throughout the year.
“The Santa Shuffle is an opportunity for me to help people in my own community,” says Bernice, 69. “You can walk, run or shuffle your way to the finish line.”

Last year, Bernice single-handedly raised more than $7,000. Since 2007, she has made the event part of her season of giving.
“My friends and family expect my call each year,” says Bernice. “Their support gets my adrenalin going for race day.”
Bernice is a member of her Salvation Army church team in St. Johns, NF, the Citadel Sensations. Aside from Bernice’s fundraising, the team raised more than $11,000 dollars last year. Ice storms, rain, or shine, they are passionate about making a difference.
“We never know what others may be going through,” says Bernice.
Since 2012, medals have been given to participants and the end of the race. Bernice has hers in full view in her bedroom.

“Looking at the medals year-round reminds me that there are always people who need our help,” says Bernice.
The Santa Shuffle will remain virtual this year to bring everyone together for a meaningful, safe, and fun run/walk on Saturday, December 4, 2021, to Sunday, December 5, 2021. To register or for more information visit santashuffle.ca.
