Donor Shares Motivation Behind Her Support Through Gifts of Securities

For Dawn Fargey from Edmonton, giving to The Salvation Army has been a tradition for almost two decades. She has admired the organization’s work for a long time, and it inspired her to support.
“People that I knew had recommended or donated to The Salvation Army. I looked into it, and I saw that it was an exceptional organization with sincere and enthusiastic care for the people who need it the most,” Dawn shares.
Dawn donates to the Army through Gifts of Securities.
“I heard other people saying how good The Salvation Army was, so that caused me to investigate it a little deeper.”
“Donating this way helps you get tax benefits on unrealized assets,” she says. “Basically, it helps your taxes.”
People who own stocks, bonds or mutual funds can directly donate publicly listed securities to The Salvation Army and in return they pay no capital gains tax on their increase in value.
“It’s common to donate this way, and The Salvation Army should be able to help walk you through it,” Dawn adds.
Although her contributions began as an adult, Dawn recalls her first connection with The Salvation Army as a child.
“I remember seeing the kettles and people ringing the bells. My mom would give me a little money to put into the kettle.”
Dawn donated to different organizations. One day, she decided to focus on a specific cause. After hearing great things and doing her own research, Dawn decided The Salvation Army was the best place for her gifts of securities to go to.

One of the main aspects of The Salvation Army she loves is their commitment to helping individuals who are dealing with personal battles. She has great admiration for The Salvation Army’s Grace Manor in Edmonton, which provides accommodation and care to adults living with a mental health diagnosis.
“It’s a centre that provides a huge benefit to the community,” Dawn adds. “The Salvation Army impacts people who are at their lowest and want help.”
In addition to her gifts of securities, Dawn has contributed to the Army’s mission by occasionally volunteering for the Christmas Kettle Campaign. Her interactions with Salvation Army staff have reassured her that her donations are going to the right place.
“It impresses me and confirms why I donate to The Salvation Army. The people are dedicated and true to the cause,” Dawn says. Thanks to her experience as a donor and having witnessed the impact The Salvation Army has had in her community Dawn encourages others to support The Salvation Army if they can.
“I would recommend that people read the information that goes into annual reports. Look at the work that’s being done and at the mass of volunteers. There must be something good if so many people support an organization.”
