Thrift Stores collecting funds to help send kids to camp

With almost 500 campers every summer, whether it’s mothers and babies for ‘moms & tots’ or children for the holiday camps, Scotian Glen Camp is always excited to see new faces.

Once again The Salvation Army thrift stores across Canada are raising money to send children to camp. Last year, they raised over $70,000 and were able to send just over 300 kids to camp across the country. Here in the Maritimes, Scotian Glen Camp, located in Thorburn, NS, received a cheque for $8465.35, which help send almost 40 kids to camp.

Barb Warren, district manager for Nova Scotia Thrift Stores, says, “It’s fabulous! Every child should get the opportunity to go to camp, and it’s great that the stores can help out. The staff is always excited to participate, and the customers love to help as well.”

The cost for one child to attend camp for a week is $220, which for lower income families, is not always easy. Major Wanda Vincent (Divisional Youth Secretary for the Maritimes) describes the fundraiser as great, and very helpful. “The more, the better; it makes for a greater impact on these children.”

This is the third year Thrift Stores will be doing this fundraiser, running now through Saturday, May 12. Your donations will give these children the opportunities that they deserve.

Every year, the Thrift Stores aim to raise more. The Salvation Army strives on giving opportunities, and this fundraiser provides marginalized children the chance to experience summer camp. One week at camp could make a huge difference in a child’s life. This is a place they can go to have fun, meet new friends and create new memories.
