A Saskatchewan Woman Uses Dough To Raise Some Dough for The Salvation Army

A Swift Current woman, Doreen Martens, found a great way to make her donation go even further to help her local Salvation Army food bank.

In March of 2020, COVID-19 caused her church to close it’s doors. Recognizing the severity of what her community was facing, she wanted to help, but didn’t know how. Doreen looked to her love of baking to guide her in her quest.

“I decided if I could invest a $100, rather than give it to The Salvation Army, if I could make money, I would do that. Buy supplies, make the bread and sell it.” – Doreen Martens

Doreen hoped her efforts could turn $100 into $300. She sold her bread to her church family, friends and relatives. The bread must be great because, at last count, she has baked a 1/2 ton of flour and raised over $6000 for The Salvation Army Food Bank in Swift Current. That’s a lot of “dough” to help people in need.

“I am very happy that I can help and I will continue to do it, at least, I plan on doing it for a long, long time. God willing, of course.”

Baking is a skill not everyone has, but Doreen encourages people to help out any way they can. Either by making a monetary donation or volunteering your time to help The Salvation Army continue to provide services. Doreen tells us, her kitchen is ready to bake some more delicious bread to help make a difference to those in need.

“Fall is in the air so the homeless and hungry will soon be feeling the cold.  Let’s do our part, you keep ordering, I will keep baking and we will keep giving to The Salvation Army food bank.”
