For The Love of Giving – Leona Hayden
The Salvation Army couldn’t do all that we do without the help of volunteers. Leona Hayden, of Saskatoon, SK, is one of our most seasoned volunteers. Leona first joined the Army in Calgary 53 years ago where she began child-minding for her local corps officers. From there, she became involved in Sunday school and other children’s programming. In 2004, she moved to Saskatoon and has been actively involved in the Saskatoon Temple children’s programming and Family Service programs ever since. For Leona, volunteering is more than just giving back to her community.
“It’s a great chance for me to do something with my day,” Leona explains, “It keeps me busy.”
10 months out of the year, you can find her preparing 150 sandwiches a week for students at Nutana Collegiate. In the summer, Leona prefers to spend her days assisting with our Nutrien Food on the Move Program, where she assists with the delivery of 300 bagged lunches a day.
“I like Food on the Move because I get to see the kids,” says Leona.
We owe a big thank-you to Leona for her 53 years of hard work and dedication to The Salvation Army. If you would like to learn more about volunteering your time or making a donation of any kind, please use the link below to find out more.
