The 6th Annual Drumheller “Stuff the Bus” event took place on August 27 and brought in 2332 lbs of food and $4003.35 for the local Salvation Army Food Bank. Community member Shannon Wade recognized that this is traditionally a time of the year when supplies run low and she has become a driving force behind “Stuff the Bus” to help restock the food bank shelves.

“With the downturn in the economy this year, our shelves our very bare and very empty,” said Shane Hillier, Community Ministries Director for The Salvation Army in Drumheller.

Community support was no problem in this small town. Encana, the event’s major corporate sponsor, pledged to donate $2 for every pound of food collected and to match cash donations dollar for dollar at this year’s event. Local radio station 99.5 DrumFM was on location providing great music and encouraging their listeners to stop by and make a donation. The local Alberta Treasury Branch (ATB) staff pooled together their resources to make a monetary donation and set out a challenge to other banks in the valley to do the same. The local Super 8 Hotel staff had “Stuff the Bus” marked on their calendars weeks prior to the event and showed up with a car load of groceries. Throughout the day, both residents and businesses dropped off both monetary and food donations.

“We are so grateful for all of the donations that were made today,” stated Captain Jennifer Hillier, local Salvation Army Officer. “This will help us feed those who need it well into the cooler months ahead.”
