As a volunteer, Audrey Arndt is part of a large crowd in Saskatchewan.

The province had the highest volunteer rate in Canada in 2010, according to a Statistics Canada report released Monday at the start of National Volunteer Week.

In 2010, 58 per cent of Saskatchewan residents ages 15 and over volunteered, down from 59 per cent in 2007. Prince Edward Island finished second in 2010 (56 per cent) and Alberta was third (55). The average volunteer in Saskatchewan gave 143 hours in 2010, down from 147 in 2007.

Arndt, who has volunteered at the Salvation Army in Regina for four years, logs 15-20 hours a week. She has more time now that she no longer works full-time.

“I love it,” she says. “It keeps me busy. I just love helping people, it makes me feel good.”
