Winnipeg, MB – How much is a penny worth? That depends on who you ask. According to the Government of Canada, it has a negative value. It costs approximately 1.6 pennies to make a penny that is worth…a penny. In the recent budget presented to Parliament, we learn the penny’s days are numbered.

With Canada set to scrap the lowly penny, The Salvation Army is inviting you to check your pockets, the jar in the cupboard and even between the couch cushions to find any pennies you have lying around. The Salvation Army Weetamah Centre will take your soon-to-be-obsolete pennies and recycle them into healthy and nutritional lunches for it’s after school homework clubs and gang outreach programs. In fact, it only takes about 200 pennies to provide a healthy meal to a child or youth who may not otherwise have access to nutritional food.

“Many of us may not think too much about going to the fridge or cupboard when we are hungry, however, there are many children and families in our city who do not have that luxury,” explains Mark Young, Ministry Director – Weetamah Centre, “When children do not get the proper nutrition they require, cognitive and motor functions become impaired. As a result, many struggle to be successful in school and in life in general. By providing a nutritional and healthy meal, we give them fuel to succeed.”

Each week The Salvation Army Weetamah Centre provides meals to 1175 people. This means 1175 people have access to nutritional food and a firmer foundation to build dignity through personal success.

The Salvation Army Weetamah Centre has set a goal for 1 Million Pennies to recycle into healthy and nutritional lunches and it invites you to be a part.

People wishing to help The Salvation Army Weetamah Centre provide a healthy lunch to a student and give hope one penny at a time can do so by dropping their pennies off at The Salvation Army Weetamah Centre at 324 Logan Avenue. Alternatively, pennies may also be dropped off at the Prairie Division Headquarters of The Salvation Army at 203-290 Vaughan Street or at the CBC Building located at 541 Portage Avenue.
