In an amazing spirit of cooperation, The Salvation Army Dunnville Community and Family Services has received a $20,000 donation from the Hagersville Food Bank to help keep people fed in Haldimand County.
The funds were raised by Hagersville Lions Club through their Catch the Ace event and the Hagersville Rocks Music Festival. Event proceeds were split evenly among several food banks in Haldimand County.
“Non-profits need every dollar we can get so for one non-profit to share and think of others in the community, it is pretty spectacular for them to do that,” says Joy Quail, Family Services Worker with The Dunnville Salvation Army. “In Haldimand County the food banks all work together, and we are one big family.”
Supplies are regularly shared among all the local food banks, ensuring that shelves are stocked with product at each location. Clients always have a great selection of food to take home in their own community.
Joy says the surprise donation might be used for a food bank summer meal program for students who won’t have access to school nutrition programs they normally would during class. The Salvation Army Dunnville Food Bank assists about 250 families, or about 500 individuals per month on average, with 7-8 new households accessing the service each month.
“There is more turnover of clients, with more working people coming in. The numbers are higher for new people coming in compared to the last 4-5 years. We’re seeing a mix of individuals, seniors and families,” Joy says.
Stephen Frank, Corps and Community Services Officer with The Salvation Army Simcoe Community Church, is grateful for the spirit of sharing and caring shown by the services club and area food banks to ensure no one goes without in Haldimand County.
“It is great that these partnerships have been built up and are lasting, particularly with the turnover of those using the food bank. It is wonderful to have that community support and being able to work together with other organizations is a real help,” Stephen says.
“Thank you to the Hagersville Lions Club and the Hagersville Food Bank for their generous donation to The Salvation Army in Dunnville.”
