The Salvation Army’s Princess Project in Guelph is helping high school students dress their best for prom!

The Salvation Army Princess Project Coordinator Carla Holmes says they sold about 150 dresses this year from the over 1000 dresses donated for their April event.

“The event has a fun atmosphere where students and their families can shop and find something exquisite for prom! We had such a variety of dresses, everything from vintage gold dresses, classic dresses and modern styles,” she said. “We also had a few formal suits available.”

The cost for each dress or suit was $20 and accessories were $5 each. The project raised just over $3200 which after covering costs for a few incidentals goes back to Community and Family Services programs.

“The project supports young people by allowing them the dignity to come and shop for their own dress or suit at an affordable price. With the increase in clothing costs and coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic, students have not had as many opportunities to work part-time. The need is greater than ever before,” said Carla.

The Salvation Army is asking people to consider donating their new dress or suit back after prom to another student next year. You can donate dresses or suits anytime Monday to Friday 9 am to Noon or 1 pm to 4 pm.

“There were so many happy shoppers finding their dresses and parents admiring their kids all dressed up. Our volunteers had so much fun too and have already said they will be there for the event next year,” said Carla.

We had so much community support and appreciation shown for this event. It was so overwhelming, and we are grateful to the community. We will definitely be continuing the legacy of the Princess Project next year.”
