The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services is Providing Practical and Emotional Support to Families Displaced by Ottawa Fire
The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) is supporting families that were evacuated from their homes after a three-alarm residential fire in Ottawa’s east end last night. Ottawa Fire reports the blaze started on the top floor of the four-storey, 32-unit apartment building in Overbrook where four people, including a child, had to be rescued.
The Salvation Army provided meals and beverages from the Emergency Disaster Services Mobile Canteen Vehicle to all those affected including first responders. Victim Services provided emotional and spiritual support. EDS is continuing to provide clothing vouchers and meals to 27 displaced families staying in hotels.
The Salvation Army served 180 hamburgers and 50 bowls of chili from the Mobile Canteen Vehicle, as well as 200 cups of coffee and hot chocolate.
Later that evening at the reception centre, where displaced families met to get information, the EDS team handed out 2 cases of bottled water and 100 snacks to those affected by the fire.
“The EDS team is ready to support when we are called upon by the City of Ottawa to any disaster, for as long as we are needed to provide practical assistance, hope and compassion to those affected,” said Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services Specialist Theresa Antonietti.
