Salvation Army Ministry Units promise a fun, screen-free time at day camps across Ontario this summer.

Becca Allen is The Salvation Army’s Divisional Children and Youth Program Coordinator in the Ontario Division. She says it has been difficult for Ministry Units to plan camps as early as usual due to COVID-19 restrictions.

“It’s led to a lot of creativity about what we can do. Nothing can stop us from creating camps that are still exciting and fun and that give kids that needed break to take their minds off the pandemic,” Allen says.

“Kids want to come together; kids want to still play these games that they aren’t able to do at home. Day camps provide those important play activities that they can’t do virtually.”

She said that several day camps across the province have created a hybrid model that combines both in person camp activities with virtual programming – originating at the Jackson’s Point Camp in Sutton. Camp Blaze is a free online program for kids ages 6-10 taking place Tuesday to Thursday throughout the summer.

At the in-person day camps, kids will take part in fun traditional camp activities, socially distanced games and other outdoor pursuits that give them a chance to run around and burn off energy. When campers check in virtually with the Jackson’s Point Camp, they will be treated to story time, Bible study and other modified camp activities.

Allen said day camps are open to anyone and campers don’t need to be a church member to attend. Allen encouraged campers to sign up as soon as possible to ensure they get a space, in case there is a rush of last-minute registrations if provincial restrictions continue to ease.

“You don’t want to miss your chance to go. It’s been a long stretch for all of us, but especially for kids. This is your chance to be outside, have fun, play games and be with other kids in a really safe environment,” Allen said. “Day camp is always fun but it’s going to feel extra special this year.”
