After retiring four years ago, Goderich resident Pat Healy wanted to give back to her community so she decided to offer her time at the local Salvation Army.

Pat began volunteering in the kitchen for the “Huron Out of the Cold” program which was at the time managed out of The Salvation Army Suncoast Citadel.  The program provided overnight shelter to guests overnight from December to March.  A light meal and breakfast were also provided to the guests. Pat helped prepare the meals and clean up.  It was through the other women working in the kitchen that she learned about the need for volunteers at The Salvation Army Food Bank.

“I’ve been doing that for a year now. I work half day shifts every other Monday at The Salvation Army Food Bank and during the Christmas season I helped with their food hamper program,” said Pat. “I really enjoy this part of volunteering with The Salvation Army. I’m able to help the most vulnerable in our communities when they are in need. .”

Along with other volunteers, Pat helped pick up toys stored in Clinton and sort them for The Salvation Army Christmas Toy Drive.  She also helped pick up and sort food for the hampers.

“It was a very friendly environment and I really enjoyed the work,” said Pat. “These are all excellent programs and The Salvation Army does so much for people in need. It’s a great place to volunteer, you can help for a few hours and they make you feel so welcome. I can’t say enough about how comfortable they make you feel there.”

“Maya Angelou once said ‘I’ve learned that you shouldn’t go through life with a catcher’s mitt on both hands. You need to be able to throw something back,’” said Salvation Army Lieutenant Derek Kerr. “Pat has thrown much back to our ministry unit by way of the countless hours she spends volunteering in our food bank. Pat, thank you for your tireless dedication to serving others.”
