Salvation Army in Napanee and Social Services Helped Residents Stay Cool This Summer
It just got a lot cooler this summer for some of the most vulnerable residents in Prince Edward and Lennox and Addington Counties. The Salvation Army in Napanee and Social Services in the two municipalities have partnered to help bring air conditioners to those in need.
Ninety-five air conditioners and fans purchased from a variety of local retailers were delivered to residents in late July and early August. Many of the residents live in social housing, have medical conditions and or are vulnerable seniors.
“Extreme heat is a definite health risk, so we were happy to partner with Social Services to provide the air conditioners. With agency referrals we purchased the units and delivered them to their homes,” said Abigail Mills, The Salvation Army Community Ministry Director in Napanee. “Residents could now stay cool while staying safe in their own environment.”
“Because of the pandemic many common rooms in social housing could not be opened and many of the buildings are older with no air conditioning available,” said Connor Dorey, Manager of Social Services for the municipalities of Prince Edward and Lennox and Addington. “For our seniors the air conditioners are providing some relief from the heat especially with the high temperatures this summer.”
The funding for the air conditioners was provided to the municipality by the Ontario government to provide individuals and organizations the ability to overcome challenges that arose as a result of Covid-19.
The Salvation Army was asked by the municipalities to use some of the funding to purchase air conditioners and fans for people who didn’t have one in their home, as cooling centers were not able to open due to Covid-19 restrictions.
“I often say when organizations and agencies work together we are able to do more and this is such a great example of how we have come together to help vulnerable people in the community during a difficult time,” said Abigail.
“I have heard from our staff and community partners how greatly appreciated the air conditioners have been as they offer people some relief,” said Connor. “ It’s been really nice working with The Salvation Army, community living partners and different agencies who have helped with installing the units and making referrals.”
Abigail says that overall they have received wonderful response from residents. “Its been a positive experience for social services and The Salvation Army,” she said.
Peggy is a resident in a seniors complex in Napanee who received a portable floor air conditioner. “I just wanted to give a big thank you for this gift, the residents here were so pleasantly surprised to receive air conditioners. It’s a gift that will keep on giving for years to come,” she said. “Its been such an excruciatingly hot summer so its come at the perfect time. Having our own air conditioners has made it so much more pleasant to sit in our own apartments.”
Community Living Lennox & Addington provides support for individuals with developmental disabilities and assists individuals in various living arrangements. The centre received 20 air conditioners and fans to distribute among those they are supporting.
“We’re delighted to have received the donation. It makes it easier for folks who cannot afford air conditioners and can now stay cool in their living situations,” said Barb Fabius, Executive Director at Community Living. “We are just so appreciative and it’s great timing with the hot weather we have had this summer.”
