Lest We Forget

On this day, The Salvation Army honours the sacrifices that thousands of brave men and women made for the freedom of our nation. Please join us as we pay tribute to those who have served and continue to serve, during times of war, conflict and peace.
History
During the First World War, The Salvation Army in Canada sent five military chaplains to the front lines to help operate huts, canteens, rest facilities, and hostels in Britain, France and Belgium. These accommodations provided troops with the opportunity to bathe, wash their clothing, eat warm meals, and prepare themselves for the difficult return to the trenches.
It is during this time that soldiers gave The Salvation Army the affectionate term ‘Sally Ann’.
Throughout World War ll and the Cold War, The Salvation Army continued to provide comforts such as hot drinks, snacks, small Christmas gifts and written cards to troops.
At home, many Salvationists visited the homes of departed soldiers to look into the well-being of their dependents and comforted many bereaved families.
The Salvation Army Today
Today, The Salvation Army continues to support the outstanding veterans and service members who put their lives at risk to secure our peace and freedom. The Salvation Army provides shelter for homeless veterans and continues to advocate for those affected by PTSD.
