Canadian Gold Coin Found in Salvation Army Christmas Kettle in Picton, Ontario

A Canadian gold coin worth $2,700 has been found in a Salvation Army Christmas Kettle in Picton, Ontario.  The anonymous donor taped two loonies on both sides of the coin before dropping it in a kettle for extra anonymity.  The coin has a $50 face value but contains 1 oz. of pure gold. 

“We are very grateful to the person who dropped the coin into the kettle and inspired by their creativity in helping the less fortunate,” said Public Relations and Development Director Sean Maddox. “The $2,700 will go a long way in assisting The Salvation Army in Picton provide Christmas support to many families.

There have been other reports in recent history of gold coins found in kettles both in Canada and in The United States. In 2009 a gold coin worth $1,200 was found in a kettle in Calgary and in 2010, a gold coin worth $1,400 was found in a kettle in Richmond Hill, Ontario.

According to news sources this December, two gold coins have been found in Fort Lauderdale and two in Houston. There are also reports of a widow who donated her wedding ring in a kettle in Boston in honour of her late husband.
