Canadian Forensic Dentist Recalls Hope in the Midst of 9/11 Disaster
The 2013 Windsor Advisory Board Luncheon was held on Monday, November 18th at the Giovani Caboto Club. The goal of this annual event, in partnership with the Rotary Club of Windsor (1918), is to highlight the work of The Salvation Army and kick-off the Christmas Kettle Campaign.
This year’s theme was “Giving Hope in the Midst of Disaster” and highlighted the work of the Army’s Emergency Disaster Services program. A Salvation Army band ensemble provided a prelude with Christmas favourites before Rotary Club President, Janet Kelly, welcomed Rotarians and guests and proceeded with club business.
Major Glenda Davis, Area Commander, introduced event emcee, Jim Crichton. Crichton is an Advisory Board member and has also agreed to serve as the 2013 Christmas Kettle Champion for Windsor. City Councillor Hilary Payne brought greetings on behalf of the Mayor and City Council and commended The Salvation Army for the work they do in the community. He then joined Jim Crichton, fellow Councillor Bill Marra, Advisory Board Chair Gerry Pocock, Janet Kelly and Salvation Army representatives for the 2013 Christmas Kettle Kick-off.
Following a video on the work of Emergency Disaster Services in the Ontario Great Lakes Division, certificates of appreciation were presented to Chief of Police, Al Frederick and EMS Chief, Randy Mellow, by Divisional Director of Emergency & Disaster Services, Perron Goodyear.
Major Pat Phinney, Divisional Secretary for Public Relations & Development introduced keynote speaker, Dr. Frank Stechey. As a Rotarian, Hamilton Advisory Board Member and Windsor native, Dr. Stechey shared his personal experiences being supported by The Salvation Army in New York City following the September 11 terrorist attacks. Dr. Stechey was the first foreign and only Canadian deployed to serve as a part of the Dental Identification Team. In his moving address, Dr. Stechey commented “I could not have survived New York without The Salvation Army”.
