November 25, 2010 – OTTAWA.  The Salvation Army held its inaugural Hope in The City Breakfast at the Westin Ottawa to mark the 125th anniversary of The Salvation Army in the Nation’s Capital and to kick-off the vital Christmas fundraising season.  Mayor-elect Jim Watson and Ottawa Centre MPP Yasir Naqvi were among the business and community leaders and donors who attended the near-capacity event.

Guest speaker, Canadian Medical Association president and Ottawa Hospital chief of staff Dr. Jeff Turnbull, spoke passionately about the direct connection between poverty and its impact on health.  Dr. Turnbull is the co-founder and medical director of the Inner City Health project, a project which provides primary medical care to homeless men and women at Ottawa shelters.  Inner City Health operates a Special Care unit within The Salvation Army’s Ottawa Booth Centre, a 30-bed unit that offers care to homeless men with complex health issues such as HIV/Aids, heart disease and diabetes.

The Salvation Army presented a special appreciation award to Tannis Food Distributors in recognition of their generosity towards The Salvation Army.   Tannis Food Distributors supply food to both The Salvation Army Ottawa Booth Centre and the Ottawa Grace Manor.
