Depressions Ugly Hold

“Depression put me in a dark place,” says Rob, 58. “I couldn’t see a future or an answer for any of the problems in my life. Depression affected my whole world and everything in it.”

Rob’s life began to spiral out of control when physical injuries prevented him from working as a roofer.

“I hid in my apartment for months and didn’t talk to anyone,” says Rob. “I had no interest in taking care of the basics such as having a shower or washing the dishes. I thought I was losing my mind.”

When Rob became homeless, The Salvation Army’s Supportive Transitional Housing Program in St. Catharines, Ont., helped him regain control of his life through life-skills training, one-on-one counselling, accountability and more.

“I’m proof that, with help, a hopeless situation can turn around,” says Rob. “I came to The Salvation Army a recluse, feeling unmotivated and absolutely worthless. Today I live in my own apartment and volunteer. Thanks to The Salvation Army, I have hope and a purpose―something I haven’t had for years.”
