Shelter From the Cold in Regina
Downstairs in the chapel at the Salvation Army Waterston Centre shelter on Osler Street, 15 beds with dark brown blankets are lined around the room, dormitory style.
A portrait of Salvation Army founder William Booth hangs on one of the cream walls, a light-coloured wooden cross on another.
The glass bricks at street-level are covered with blue and white pictures of flowers, brightening the room and providing some privacy for those who will be calling the room home.
The room was the Salvation Army chapel, but is now an emergency cold weather shelter for men.
It officially opened its doors on Saturday – though some homeless men have been taking advantage of it since last Tuesday, when the mercury hit -27C overnight.
It’s only a short-term solution, Waterston Executive Director Ben Lippers stressed at the official opening, while community partners figure out exactly what the needs are in Regina and how they can be addressed in the long-term.
