Salvation Army Makes Family’s First Christmas in Canada a Special One
When Yuliani’s family arrived in Lloydminster, Alta. for the first time last year, they entered a world filled with uncertainties. While they were excited about pursuing the dream of a new and better life, they encountered several challenges.
“We arrived without knowing anyone, and only with an employment offer for my husband,” Yuliani says.
Although her husband having a job immediately was beneficial, it was tough for a single salary to cover the expenses of their family of four, including Yuliani and her two children.
“They helped us with groceries, which was a blessing.”
“We accrued lots of debts to be able to get to Canada. We were full of debt in a new country, with a salary that barely covered our rent,” she adds.
To supplement her husband’s income, Yuliani researched online for opportunities to get help after struggling to find employment. During her search, she discovered The Salvation Army.
“Fortunately, throughout the next few months, The Salvation Army helped us a lot. They helped us with groceries, which was a blessing,” Yuliani shares.
During one of her visits to the food bank, it was suggested that Yuliani sign up for Christmas assistance. She felt it would be a great chance to make Christmas special for her children despite the financial difficulties they were facing at the time.
“I went with my children to receive the presents. It was very special for them. It filled our hearts.”
Yuliani received two bags filled with gifts from The Salvation Army, and she kept them packaged until Christmas Day.
“They were so excited that they would try to peek inside the bag before then,” Yuliani recalls. “To see my children be able to open the Christmas gifts was wonderful. I’ll never forget that first Christmas in Canada.”
Yuliani also received a grocery gift card.
“Without The Salvation Army things would have been very different.”
“We used the card for our Christmas dinner. It helped us save some money for food and gifts for the children as well. The Salvation Army was a great help,” she says.
Grateful for the support they received in their first few months in Canada, Yuliani and her husband have volunteered at The Salvation Army.
“A lot of us newcomers have to start from scratch when we arrive and we go through challenging times,” says Yuliani. “Thanks to the support of The Salvation Army, we were able to improve our situation and now we can look back and be grateful for their help.”
While the family is in a better situation now, the staff at The Salvation Army encouraged Yuliani to sign up for Christmas assistance again. Her children are excited.
Yuliani says her first Christmas in Canada was special, thanks to The Salvation Army.
“Without The Salvation Army things would have been very different. Plus, they truly helped us get settled in this country. I would like to thank everyone who is part of The Salvation Army’s team, especially in Lloydminster. They are great people.”
