The Salvation Army in Langford, on Vancouver Island, celebrated the grand opening of its newest and largest thrift store on June 6, 2024, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The 11,000-square-foot store, situated in the former Capital Iron building, marks the organization’s seventh location in the Greater Victoria area.

The highly anticipated event drew a crowd of over 200 eager shoppers, some of whom had lined up for more than two hours before the 10 a.m. opening. Among the attendees were two esteemed members of The Salvation Army’s Greater Victoria Advisory Board, Marisa Adair and Bruce Hallsor.

Marisa, who was inducted into the advisory board in November 2020, brings a wealth of experience in communications and public affairs, having worked with doctors in B.C. Meanwhile, Bruce has been a steadfast supporter of the Army’s initiatives, serving as the chair of the annual Hope in the City Luncheon for the past five years, from 2018 to 2023.

“Not only will we provide items of good value for shoppers, but the proceeds from those sales will stay in the community to support our programs and services.”

“This is a great day for the community,” said Captain David Hickman, who oversees The Salvation Army Connection Point Church and Resource Centre on Goldstream Avenue. “Not only will we provide items of good value for shoppers, but the proceeds from those sales will stay in the community to support our programs and services.”

The new Langford location will offer a variety of gently-used clothing, household goods, electronics, art, and books, as well as a dedicated donation centre open seven days a week. This expansion will allow the Army to further its mission of serving those in need, including new Canadians and the influx of Ukrainian refugees to the West Shore.

Ted Troughton, the Ontario-based managing director for The Salvation Army National Recycling Operations (NRO), was on hand to help cut the ribbon for the new store. “The City of Langford is bustling with growth and development, and we are thrilled to be expanding our community outreach in the area to serve even more individuals and families,” he said.
