KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Service Responsibilities:
- Assist with food preparation and service on a daily basis, in accordance with the approved monthly menu.
- Prepare sandwiches for working client’s lunches when needed.
- Ensure that food waste is kept to a minimum.
- Assist with checking and putting away food orders on arrival from suppliers.
- Clean dishes from meals and all food preparation devices ensuring that they are maintained to a high state of cleanliness.
- Ensure the kitchen, pantry and the walk-in freezer/fridge are kept clean and organized at all times.
- Assist Food Manager/Cook with inventory of all provisions and utensils, dishes, etc.
- Assist with preparing special luncheons, etc., as necessary to accommodate visits, etc.
- On completion of meals, ensure the dining room tables, chairs, and floors are washed, and the area is tidy.
- Ensure that proper safety precautions and hygiene standards are followed, including Universal Precautions.
- Treat all clients with respect and dignity at all times.
- Perform other duties as required.
- Maintain all records and reports as required.
Organizational Responsibilities:
- Demonstrate knowledge of The Salvation Army Booth Centre Policy and Procedures Manual and make suggestions to improve the same.
- Meet with the Food Manager/Shelter Manager for supervision as scheduled.
- Engage in formal evaluation sessions with the Food Manager/Shelter Manager at six and twelve months in the first year and annually thereafter.
- Model appropriate qualities for this position – i.e., self-motivation, punctuality, and personal hygiene.
- Commit to and sign the agency and clients’ confidentiality form.
- Attend staff meetings of The Salvation Army Booth Centre, Hamilton, Staff Training workshops and conferences, as authorized by the Centre.
- Work within mandate and mission of the Salvation Army
- Represent The Salvation Army Booth Centre in a professional manner.
Perform other duties as required.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
This is a temporary part-time position for 1 year available. Flexibility in scheduling is required. The work schedule is determined in consultation with your supervisor and may vary according to requirements of responsibility. Applicable shifts include a ½ hour unpaid meal break.
Shifts: Sunday to Wednesday 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
- May work with potentially aggressive clients.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- College diploma or Certificate of Food Management/Preparation, and/or a combination of education and life-related experience in the field of food preparation.
- Possess a current WHMIS, First Aid and CPR certificate.
- Possess a current Food Safe Certificate.
- Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:
- Ability to work both independently and under supervision.
- Ability to lift/carry loads up to forty pounds.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and effective interpersonal skills.
- Ability to establish and implement goals and plans for self and staff.
- Maturity and ability to exercise sound judgement.
- Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.
- Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
