Description

The Groundkeeper is responsible to maintain the external grounds at the New Hope Community Church.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

General

  • Ensure the general upkeep of external property such as mowing lawns, keeping sidewalks clear of snow and ice, cleaning main floor outside windows, picking up litter, sweeping sidewalks, gardening/watering and planting shrubs, pruning, weeding, and raking.
  • Picks up equipment and supplies, i.e. fuel and soil.
  • Provide support with the Food bank in organizing donations, removing garbage, keeping the Food Bank area clean and helping with unpacking food deliveries.

Health and Safety

  • Ensure proper storage and basic maintenance of equipment.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.

Perform other work-related duties as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This is a temporary full-time position with 30 hours per week for 8 weeks.
  • Flexibility in scheduling is required and may include Saturdays.
  • The incumbent’s work environment is the property and grounds of the facility.
  • The incumbent is required to lift/move up to 50 pounds.
  • The performance of the job requires operating tools and equipment, sweeping, bending/twisting/lifting/kneeling, occasional ladder work and fine motor skills.
  • Travel is required.
  • Steel-toed safety boots or shoes are required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • This position is funded in part through the Canada Summer Jobs Program and the following represents the applicant criteria:
  • aged 15 to 30 years at the beginning of the employment period;
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment*; and,
  • holds a valid Social Insurance Number;
  • and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
  • *International students are not eligible participants. International students include anyone who is temporarily in Canada for studies and who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada.
  • An ongoing condition of employment is the ability to maintain immigration status to legally remain and work in Canada which is supported by valid immigration documents.
  • The successful job applicant will have completed High School.

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Minimum of one (1) year of prior related experience, including experience gardening, operating machinery, and familiarity with relevant equipment.

SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:

  • Self-motivated and disciplined.
  • Work within agency fire safety, health & safety and emergency procedures.
  • Lead by example, by demonstrating a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn and be flexible.
  • Ability to maintain information in confidence and exercise good judgement.
  • Ability to work independently and participate as an active and responsible team member in a cooperative team environment.
  • Exhibit good listening skills, have strong oral/written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, integrity, and adaptability.
  • Effective organizational and time management skills.
  • Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work with little supervision but also able to accept direction when necessary.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
