Description

The Childcare Worker assists individuals and families who are seeking aid and assistance from, or have been referred to, The Salvation Army and/or attend programs.  This position provides support to Parent-Child programs and other programs as provided by Kitchener Community Church and Family Care Centre.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Program Support

  • Facilitate the daily operation of Parent-Child programs.
  • Support individuals/families accessing Parent-Child programs.
  • Assist with the implementation of literacy programs.
  • Plan and supervise community-based drop-in programs.
  • Plan and implement activities for the Summer Day Camp.
  • Set up and cleanup program space.
  • Disinfect toys.
  • Provide input in the planning of activities.
  • Participate in staff, team and planning meetings.
  • Create and implement opportunities for intergenerational interactions and programs.
  • Survey participant families for program satisfaction and collate responses.
  • Research and collate literacy-based activities to be used in programs. Create At-A-Glance literacy-based information sheets for families to take home.
  • Ensure all children and adults are treated with dignity and respect and maintain all information in confidence.

Supervision of children

  • Provide assistance in the supervision of children up to 12 years of age.
  • Greet families as they arrive with their children.
  • Monitor and engage with the children in connection with other childcare workers.
  • Provide support to the early education of the children.
  • Communicate with parents’ successes of the child’s day.
  • Communicate with parents any challenges that may have been experienced.
  • Supervise children on the bus to and from Adventure Camp.

Reporting

  • Create and maintain list of reports required for health and safety compliance purposes.
  • Support external reporting requests as needed.

Perform other related duties as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This is a temporary full-time position based on 35 hours per week.
  • Typical work hours will be 8:30 am – 4 pm with a 30-minute unpaid lunch break.
  • Your supervisor will set the work schedule. Flexibility in scheduling is required.
  • The typical working location for this position is in Kitchener Community Church and Family Care Centre which includes indoor and outdoor spaces.  May include a school bus to and from Adventure Camp (Jackson’s Point, Ontario)
  • Ability to lift/move up to 40 lbs. and this job requires reaching, bending, and stooping frequently; working in a standing position for long periods of time.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Submit as required a Police Record Check (vulnerable sector check) that is acceptable to The Salvation Army in its sole discretion.
  • This position is funded in part through the Canada Summer Jobs Program and the following represents the applicant criteria:
    • aged 15 to 30 years at the beginning of the employment period.
    • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment*; and,
    • holds a valid Social Insurance Number; and,
    • be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
  • *International students are not eligible participants.  International students include anyone who is temporarily in Canada for studies and who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada.
  • An ongoing condition of employment is the ability to maintain immigration status to legally remain and work in Canada which is supported by valid immigration documents.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completed Secondary School
  • A current valid Standard First Aid and CPR certificate or willingness to obtain.

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • 1 – 2 years’ experience working with children.

SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:

  • Comfortable in speaking with parents and caregivers daily.
  • Ability to maintain information in confidence and exercise good judgement.
  • Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility.
  • Ability to work independently and participate as an active and responsible team member in a cooperative team environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work cooperatively, patiently, and effectively.
  • Be a Good Listener – Have a desire to create a safe space and be attentive to the needs of others.
  • Be Servant-Hearted – Have a servant attitude, being flexible and willing to pitch in and assist as part of the team.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s Health & Safety policies and procedures.
  • Undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry)
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
