As part of The Salvation Army Boundless Vancouver team, the Summer Coding Day Camp Leader reports to the Youth & Family Ministries Coordinator. Through frontline work with youth and families, this role contributes to our local commitment, “We welcome neighbours into a community of hope.” During the summer, families are stressed to find supervision and meaningful activities for their children. We will support families and nurture their children in holistic programming.

The Summer Coding Day Camp Leader is required to perform their duties in a manner consistent with the Salvation Army Boundless Vancouver’s core values, ensure neighbour safety as required, demonstrate team collaboration, and provide support to our Coding Camp team in an efficient, professional, and confidential manner.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist in skills workshops for camp participants (i.e. coding) as instructed by camp facilitators.
  • Set up equipment for coding camp as per instructions.
  • Provide supervision and leadership to children during outdoor outings.
  • Develop relationships with children, using empathy and active listening to encourage happy and well-developed children and youth, living in peace with themselves and others.
  • Participate in staff training and development.
  • Know and act in accordance with policies and procedures of The Salvation Army to ensure the safety and confidentiality of participants and information.
  • Perform other relevant duties as assigned (set up, clean up, communication).

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

Education/Certifications:

  • The successful candidate must have completed high school or currently be in high school.
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience with children and youth, with general knowledge of children’s behavior and developmental stages.
  • Able to handle difficult situations with maturity and with the ability to adapt.
  • Basic coding experience.
  • First Aid/CPR training.

Required Skills/Knowledge:

  • Passionate for building loving relationships with youth and children inspired by the positive values of The Salvation Army (Hope, Service, Dignity, and Stewardship), and Boundless Vancouver (relationships and transformation).
  • A demonstration of openness to and respect for spiritual disciplines and participation in community faith practices.
  • Able to problem solve on the spot, being resilient and flexible.
  • Ability to take a leadership role and communicate in a group setting.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work cooperatively, patiently and effectively with other leaders.
  • A desire to be creative and innovative showing initiative with limited supervision.
  • Teaching or instructional skills in subjects for day camp participants is an asset.
  • Clear and current Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Screening.

Successful candidates, prior to hiring, may be required to provide:

  • Background check consent.
  • A clear vulnerable sector screening.

HOURS:

  • Starting as early July 8th until August 2nd, 2024.
  • Full Time, Monday-Friday, 8:30am to 4:00pm.

  • Creative and flexible with the ability to adapt based on team, program, and service needs.
  • Excellent administrative, organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Digital skills with Microsoft platforms are an asset.
  • Holding a valid Driver's License may be an asset.
