Description

The Chaplain provides spiritual and emotional support to clients through one-on-one counselling, group sessions and referrals to community agencies.  The Chaplain provides advocacy and referral of residents and clients to empower self-sufficiency and re-integration into the community.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Pastoral Care

  • Provides pastoral care to residents and clients through visits and/or correspondence.
  • Coordinate and lead weekly chapel services through invitation to groups and chapel service leaders. Be present for weekly chapel service to introduce leader and/or group and assist as required in chapel.
  • Conducts individual spiritual assessment and care plan for residents and clients.
  • Coordinate special activities such as Christmas, Easter, etc. throughout the year.
  • Provide spiritual support, advocacy and referral of clients in order to empower self-sufficiency and re-integration into community.
  • Conduct pastoral counseling sessions with assigned clients.
  • Develop, provide and sustain regular programs (e.g. ALPHA, chapel services, Bible studies, discussion groups, pastoral and grief counseling).
  • Make referrals for resident or community members, upon request, to Salvation Army Corps and churches in the area where he/she will be residing.
  • Make hospital visits to Residents, Clients, Staff.
  • Provide leadership in arranging funerals for residents or community members with funeral homes or other agencies as requested.
  • Distribute Bibles and other Christian literature as requested and available.
  • Support Executive Director in other duties as required.

Administration

  • Develop Spiritual & Religious Care Department within the framework and criteria of Salvation Army Accreditation standards.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate records, documentation, and procedural forms in relation to residents and clients.
  • Develop and maintain a strong awareness of Salvation Army and community programs which may benefit clients.
  • Participate in case management team meetings by engaging with clients and case workers.
  • Serve on committees as requested.
  • Submit Pastoral Care Department statistics to Administrative Assistant on a monthly basis.
  • Participate in Bayside Mission Centre Management Team meetings.

Volunteer Coordination

  • Communicate volunteer requirements to the Volunteer Services and Special Events Coordinator
  • Supervises, trains, orients, documents, and monitors Spiritual and Religious Care Department volunteers.

WORKING CONDITIONS:  

  • This is a permanent part time position based on 25 hours per week.
  • The supervisor sets the hours of work and work schedule and flexibility in scheduling is required.
  • Chaplain works in the entire facility and in an office setting.
  • Moderate amount of standing, walking, physical intervention, assisting clients in wheel chairs/walkers, and some date input.
  • Ability to reach, bend, stoop, and occasionally lift more than 20 pounds.
  • May deal with clients who become angry.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Post-secondary education in Pastoral Counseling, Religious Education or Biblical and Theological studies.
  • Completion of Non-Violence Crisis Intervention Training or willingness to obtain.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certificate or willingness to obtain.

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Must have two (2) years of prior related experience including frontline casework experience in a social service environment.
  • Previous experience providing individual support to people living in poverty, dealing with mental health issues, addictions, social isolations and/or homelessness is required.
  • Knowledge and experience in Christian based interviewing and counselling skills.
  • Knowledge of other faith groups religious beliefs and practices.
  • Knowledge of community resources and services.
  • Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License and a current copy of a Driver’s abstract for review and verification that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.

SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:

  • Ability to work with people experiencing homelessness.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Possess computer skills in Microsoft Office
  • Has a positive attitude and works well with other team members.
  • Ability to be an attentive listener, analyze, provide guidance and close observation of the client/environment.
  • Maintain confidentiality in all matters pertaining to clientele and staff of The Salvation Army.
  • Self-motivated and disciplined.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
