ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Reporting to the Director of Care and working in collaboration with the IPAC Lead (day) the Infection Prevention and Control Lead (evening) is responsible for building and promoting an organization-wide culture of compliance and adherence to infection prevention and control standards and requirements set under applicable legislation as well as The Meighen Health Centre’s policies & procedures.

The IPAC Lead is required to perform their duties in a manner consistent with the Salvation Army Meighen Health Centre’s core values, ensure resident safety, and demonstrate customer service excellence while responsible for planning, implementing and evaluating programs and services provided to the residents.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop, implement, monitor, and evaluate infection control programs/policies, as well as build capacity. internally and externally to detect and manage Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) issues.
  • Works with the IPAC Lead (day) and interdisciplinary team to implement the infection prevention and control program.
  • Manages and oversees the infection prevention and control program in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.
  • In collaboration with the IPAC Lead (day) provides infection prevention and control education delivery to all staff, caregivers, volunteers, visitors and residents.
  • Completes auditing of infection prevention and control practices in the home.
  • Conduct regular infectious disease surveillance.
  • Reviews the information in Point Click Care regarding symptoms indicating the presence of infection in residents, monitoring and taking action to reduce transmission and isolate residents, cohorting as required.
  • Reviews and monitors the immunization and screening measures in place as per legislation.
  • Conduct research and interpret evidence-based literature in developing IPAC best practices guidelines, tools, and resources.
  • Evaluate initiatives, programs, policies, and resources and provide IPAC best practice recommendations.
  •  Acts as an expert resource as needed for Infection Prevention and Control for the whole organization.
  • Participates in internal/external committee work as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This is a temporary part-time role based on 60 hours biweekly until March 31, 2025.
  • This role is in a seniors congregate setting and may be subject to working in outbreak (COVID, flu, etc.) conditions
  • May work with residents who are physically or cognitively impaired.
  • Interacts with families, staff, volunteers, provincial health care services, and community partners.
  • Schedule may vary according to requirements of responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Current registration and member in good standing as an RPN or RN with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Current certification in Infection Control (CIC).

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Recent experience working in infection control in a healthcare setting (Long Term Care or Acute Care).
  • Recently applied knowledge of infection control theory and practices.
  • Education and experience in infection prevention and control practices, including, but not limited to, infectious diseases, cleaning and disinfection, data collection and trend analysis, reporting protocols, outbreak management, asepsis, microbiology, adult education, epidemiology, and program management.
  • Advanced knowledge of relevant legislation, Occupational Health & Safety Act and Regulations, as well as Fixing the Long-Term Care Homes Act and its Regulations.

SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:

  • Computer literacy in a Windows environment including Outlook, Word, Power Point, Teams, and Excel. Knowledge of Point Click Care would be an asset.
  • Deal tactfully and courteously with residents, resident’s families, visitors, and staff in a positive manner.
  • Demonstrate a high level of integrity, sound judgment and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the proven ability to build credibility and strong partnerships at all levels by fostering positive relations with employees, unions, and external partners through engagement and leadership.
  • Ability to interpret and apply best practices and/or evidence-based guidelines in IPAC to the current practice setting.
  • Demonstrated analytical, problem solving, and evaluation skills to investigate and initiate corrective action to resolve issues.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation communication skills in English.
  • Good organizational and time management skills with the ability to change focus rapidly based on new and/or urgent priorities.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Vulnerable Sector Screening prior to entering the workplace.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
