Description

The Community & Family Services Worker assists individuals and families who are seeking aid and assistance from, or have been referred to, The Salvation Army.  This position also provides support to the Food Bank Program and other programs provided ty the Community and Family Services.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Client services and Programs

  • Conduct initial intake application and screen clients for general emergency assistance, including food, clothing household needs, referrals etc.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential records of client information on The Salvation Army’s computer system while maintaining confidentiality and providing statistical reports.
  • In coordination with the Community Ministries Officer, organize, plan, and deliver seasonal and special programs such as Christmas Assistance, Christmas Kettles, Food Drive, summer camps, Backpack, and other Salvation Army Community Services programs as required.
  • Ensure that ministry objectives are accomplished and that a spiritual focus is applied to all programs/initiatives.
  • Oversee the activities of the food bank: organize and ensure that the food bank is tidy and clean, adequate stock levels, sort and process donated goods and process clients through the food bank.
  • Network and refer to The Salvation Army, government, and community social service providers to coordinate resources for the benefit of clients and program when necessary.
  • Develop relationships and maintain a good understanding of services provided by external agencies.
  • Actively promote The Salvation Army Community Services within the community in collaboration with Community Ministries Officer or designate.

Supervision

  • May direct and supervise volunteers, including recruitment, selection, orientation, and training in Community Services
  • May assist in the development of strategies and recommendations for volunteer development.
  • In consultation with Community Ministries Officer organize regular meetings/training with volunteers.

Finance & Administration

  • Ensure that Ministry Unit policies and procedures are followed for the safe/secure handling of all monetary donations received and appropriate documentation of gift cards and various vouchers is maintained.
  • Maintain accurate records of client information on the appropriate databases while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Maintain data such as operational and statistical reports as required in a timely and organized manner
  • Periodically review program assistance guidelines with Community Ministries Officer.

Health and Safety

  • Ensure that the Community & Family Services and Food Bank area is area is maintained regarding appearance, condition and safety as recommended by Public Health etc.
  • Ensure the safety and comfort of the ministry unit by maintaining cleanliness and food safety etc.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.

Perform other position related duties as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This is a permanent full-time position based on 37.5 hours per week with a ½ hour unpaid meal break.
  • Supervisor determines schedule according to requirements of responsibilities and seasonal demands.
  • Working environment is typically in the office in generally agreeable conditions.
  • This job requires reaching, bending, and stooping frequently, working in a sitting, and standing position for periods of time; the ability to lift/move up to 30 lbs./13.6078 kg.
  • Some travel may be required to pick up food donations or attend other community partners.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completion of a Community College Diploma, Social Service Worker, or equivalent in a related field of study.
  • Ability and willingness to provide a valid Safe Food Handlers Certification.
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certificate and First Aid/CPR preferred, or willingness to obtain.
  • Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License, own vehicle, and insurance, provide an original copy of current driver’s abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Minimum of two (2) years of prior related experience, including experience working with multi-barriered persons, person with mental health issues and/or issues of substance abuse.
  • Knowledge of community-based resources and experience networking with government and social service agencies.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, integrity, and adaptability and ability to exercise diplomacy, tact, and compassion.
  • Good computer skills and experience using Microsoft Office Suite
  • Demonstrated patience and compassion to work with challenging and/or emotionally dependent individuals.
  • Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
