Description

The Community Ministries Coordinator will provide support and assistance to the community through the development, implementation, and oversight of programs while giving focused attention to strengthening and growing clients in a cooperative team-based environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

General

  • Ensure that all duties are completed in accordance with the principles, standards, policies, and procedures of The Salvation Army.
  • Assist Barrhaven Church leadership team with ongoing strategic planning to ensure programming reflects community needs.
  • Ensure that programs (including program reviews, inspections, and audits) meet contractual, legal and internal requirements.
  • Assess community needs and review client feedback to determine potential alternate programing and develop a strategy for the implementation of such programs.

Program

  • Oversee ongoing programming to ensure that it meets criteria and is carried out in a manner that supports the best interests of the clients.
  • Conduct client intakes, assessing theirs needs and determining how we can best assist them. This may include goal setting.
  • Make necessary referrals for clients based on need.
  • Develop, implement, and supervise community programs that have been supported by the Barrhaven Church leadership team.
  • Develop and maintain a good understanding and relationships with external agencies and services providers.
  • Build and maintain relationships with local businesses as potential vendors/donors.
  • Network with Salvation Army, government, and community social services providers to coordinate resources for the benefit of clients and program.
  • Assist with seasonal fundraising efforts as needed.
  • Where applicable, link community members to the church family and programs.

Human Resources

  • Recruit, support, assist, train, and demonstrate work methods and ensure that volunteers across all programs work together to achieve the purpose of the organization and actively engage in community ministries.
  • Responsible to review and assign weekly workload for all Community and Family Services volunteers.
  • Develop strategies and recommendations for staff and volunteer development.
  • Responsible for preparing volunteer work schedules.
  • Ensure that all volunteers maintain any mandatory training or certification; identify any training needs and reports to the Corps Officer.
  • Ensure that outreach programming is adequately staffed with volunteers who are trained and vetted as required.

Health and Safety

  • Monitor staff and volunteer safety practices in compliance with health and safety standards, and prepare, submit, and act on incident reports providing calming intervention as required ensuring the safety of everyone.
  • May perform workplace inspections as required.
  • Assist in the orientation of new staff and volunteers regarding health and safety procedures.
  • Responsible to report any serious health and safety infractions in accordance with policies to the Corps Officer and/or health and safety representative.
  • Report any safety hazards, maintenance problems, equipment or supply needs to the Corps Officer and/or health and safety representative.
  • Ensure the Community and Family Services Department is cleaned regularly according to acceptable health standards and that physical property is maintained, arranging for repairs as necessary.
  • Seek out continual education in food safety and health standards.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.

Administration and Finance

  • Maintain accurate and confidential client and volunteer records, using Salvation Army approved software.
  • Maintain accurate written records, logs of activities, including activity reports and statistical information.
  • May prepare and submit grant/funding applications and reports as required.
  • Provide input in the development and implementation of policies and procedures for Community and Family Services programs.
  • Develop and prepare promotional materials and update social media sites.

Perform other position related duties as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This is a permanent full-time position based on 35 hours per week.
  • Schedule may vary according to requirements of responsibilities – some weekend and evening work may be required; flexibility is required as it relates to hours of work.
  • Ability to lift 25-40
  • Working environment is typically in the office in generally agreeable conditions.
  • This job requires reaching, bending and stooping frequently, working in a standing position for periods of time.
  • Dealing with difficult people and verbal abuse.
  • Travel is required and associated with this position. (5%-10%) may use Salvation Army program vehicle when available.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completion of a post-secondary/college diploma, preferable in Human (Social) Services field or equivalent.
  • Additional education in programming and organization is an asset.
  • Valid Safe Food Handlers Certification.
  • Valid First Aid/CPR.
  • Non-violent Crisis Intervention training would be an asset.
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Minimum of two (2) years of prior related experience, including, experience in a specialized social services program; inclusive of supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of social media platforms.
  • Knowledge of community-based resources and experience networking with government and social service agencies.
  • Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License, current copy of a driver’s abstract for review and verification that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, is required.

  • Attentive listening skills for the purpose of supervision, counseling, and conflict resolution.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication (oral and written) skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to complete assignments and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Lead by example, by demonstrating a positive attitude and a strong work ethic.
  • Proficient in working in a computerized environment must have strong skills using Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
