About the Position

The Compensation & Benefits Director I is responsible for the management and administration of the Territorial Compensation or Benefits portfolio and processes for The Salvation Army. This broadly includes the development of territorial policies, consistent processes, and effective client service, coaching and training to ensure compliance with compensation principles and legislative compliance.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Strategy and Planning:

  • Responsible for guiding the design, development and implementation of the portfolio and administration policies and procedures throughout the Territory
  • Research trends, changes to Human Rights and employment legislation and incorporate these changes to ensure that policies and their application are compliant with necessary legislative requirements as well as the culture and values of The Salvation Army
  • Keep up to date on legislative changes that may impact the portfolio
  • Work within the portfolio’s timeline and associated activities including the communications framework to ensure programs are executed effectively
  • Serve as subject matter expert on portfolio-related matters and support the effective design and implementation of business processes and system requirements for portfolio’s modules
  • Identify the measures and metrics needed to assess program and process effectiveness
  • Measure program/service effectiveness by analyzing qualitative and quantitative data and comparing results against expected objectives
  • Provide guidance and support to Divisional Directors when required
  • Prepare materials and present analyses, recommendations, and presentations to senior leaders and Executives

Communication and Change Management:

  • Work closely with Divisional management on the portfolio-related issues
  • Develop communication, change management and training strategies and tactics to continually inform and update all ER Directors, Advisors, and senior leaders regarding territorial policies, best practices and changes in processes
  • Ensure initiatives are delivered efficiently and effectively by coordinating and providing effective communication tools, education and training materials related to all processes and polices related to the portfolio
  • Manage and facilitate training sessions throughout the Territory as required

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completion of university degree or equivalent with business, HR and/or analytical focus
  • Has or is working towards a professional designation is an asset

Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements:

  • A minimum of 7 years of prior related experience, including consulting and supervisory experience
  • Experience working as an HR generalist as well as compensation specialist strongly preferred
  • Experience in effectively launching new on-line processes integrated into HRIS systems
  • Expert in compensation analytical work including expert excel skills and quantitative analysis

PREFERRED SKILLS/CAPABILITIES:

  • Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Ability to provide an original copy of a Background Check that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required, including Child Check (if appropriate).
  • Must be able to establish credibility quickly within the organization as a trusted advisor, coach and thinking partner; able to work in a consultative, diplomatic manner
  • People oriented leader who delivers results with excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Strong ability to proactively recognize potential risks and issues, respond with solutions and engage others in implementing change
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills-clear and simple to understand
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities – integrity, good judgment, discretion, confidentiality and clearly articulated decision-making ability; empowers people to work toward common goals
  • Strong change management skills, especially related to building relationships and trust, and communicating clearly to facilitate alignment and change
  • Excellent qualitative and quantitative analytic and problem-solving skills
  • High level of motivation and results orientation with experience in the development and implementation of management and compensation plans.
  • Superior project management skills including the ability to manage complex processes that cross business lines in a diplomatic and professional manner
  • Respect, understanding, and support of The Salvation Army’s mission, culture, and values

Compensation

The target hiring range for this position is $90,674-$113,343, with the ability to progress to a maximum of $136,011. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
